Legal challenges, IDAHOT Celebrations : Caribbean IRN Update April, May 2013

The months of April and May 2013 saw LGBT issues being discussed in Caribbean courts and in the media. The International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia celebrations around 17 May, 2013 provided focus to the work being done in the Caribbean.

Activist Deni James of the group, MSM No Political Agenda of Trinidad & Tobago died on 8 May, 2013.

In Belize, the prohibition of homosexuals from entering the country became personal for Maurice Tomlinson who decided not to apply for a waiver to go visit his son, who was doing well in a Spelling Bee competition.

Caribbean Commentary continued with articles such as Sexuality and the State by Dr Dylan Kerrigan,  Peeping Tom in Guyana asking "Coming Soon our Way  : Same Sex Marriage" and Stella Says in Stabroek News "We all have the right to be who we really are"

In Guyana, the Constitutional Challenge on the Cross Dressing laws came up in Court, while in Belize, the UNIBAM Constitutional Challenge was also up for hearing.

In Guyana also, the United States Ambassador in Guyana also called for 'action on LGBT Rights' and  several rights groups called for an end to discrimination against LBT women

IDAHOT in Trinidad & Tobago was marked with the launch of a report of a survey of 'Attitudes to Homosexuals in Trinidad & Tobago" The survey was implemented by CADRES in partnership with CAISO. The summary of the report, the media reports and the reports on the statement by the  Minister of Gender, Youth and Child Development that 'gay rights are not in the draft National Gender Policy' are here.

In Belize, the National Gender Policy included 'sexual orientation' and there were comparisons made with Trinidad.


IDAHO in Guyana was celebrated through a newspaper OpEd by SASOD/Joel Simpson and a public painting event. In Jamaica, JFLAG co-ordinated the inaugural Larry Chang Human Rights Symposium, "Homeless at Home: Displaced and in Search of A Safer Life"
In Belize, IDAHOT was also marked with several activities including a message from the First Lady, Kim Barrow calling for an end to violence against LGBT Belizeans.




In Dominica, the Catholic Church calls for an end to discrimination against homosexuals while restating its opposition to same-sex unions. The group MIRIDOM continues its advocacy. 




 In Cuba, there were several events also for IDAHOT 2013, all co-ordinated through CENESEX

The 27 April, 2013 marked the 10 th Anniversary of the public forum in Guyana on 'Sexual Orientation as a Fundamental Right; and this blog reflects on the forum.

In Puerto Rico, legislators approved legislation which outlawed employment based discrimination on the grounds of gender or sexual orientation.

Caribbean Republics and homophobic laws : Caribbean IRN Update October, November, December 2021

Loss Brandy Rodriguez President of the Trinidad and Tobago Transgender Coalition died and activist groups remembered her work on HIV/AIDS and on dealing with other forms of discrimination .   Republics and homophobic laws Barbados became a Republic on 30 November2021 and activists expect that the colonial laws could be removed. Article 1 of the The Charter of Barbados which was debated in Parliamen t stated that "All Barbadians are born free and are equal in human dignity and rights regardless of age, race, ethnicity, faith, class, cultural and educational background, ability, sex, gender or sexual orientation." Barbados joins Guyana and Trinidad & Tobago as Caribbean Republics evolving from the British Empire. Pride - Caribbean IRN Update - May, June, July, August, September 2023

Composite Image derived from Left - Cuba Conga 2023 Yamil Lage/AFP , Right - Barbados Pride from Barbados Today   Pride A conga against homophobia and transphobia was held in Cuba in May 2023 , returning for the first time since 2018.     Pride Month in June was commemorated by Pride Barbados , concluding in a march.  The Guyana Pride Festival was held in June and included the Pride Parade .   In July,  Pride Parade was held in Cayman Islands and in Martinique Pride Trinidad and Tobago was celebrated in July. St Lucia Pride Week was held in August for the fifth time. Pride Week in Belize was held in August., around the anniversary of the Court ruling which struck down the sodomy laws in Belize. The theme for Bermuda Pride was 'Homecoming'. Pride Ja was celebrated in August in Jamaica.  The Pride March in Guadelope had six persons.  The US Embassy in Bahamas raised the Pride Flag, and US Vice-President Kamala Harris reportedly expressed support for activist Alexus D&#
