Sex in a police station 1pm on a Sunday - Caribbean IRN update Jan, Feb, March, April 2026

1959. British Guiana. Ruimveldt Police Station. Sex around 1pm on a Sunday afternoon

The news report in the Guiana Graphic of July 28th 1959 reports that Miss Broad Street and another man have a charge for committing 'unnatural act' in the Rumveldt Police Station one Sunday Afternoon around 1pm.

If the police reports are true, what does it say about the sheer audacity of Miss Broad Street and the other man just after having the very public 'all male wedding'?

In 2026 Guyana,  Sherwood Clarke,  General Secretary of the Clerical and Commercial Workers Union (CCWU) uses Labour Day to speak out against discrimination against LGBT citizens saying that "CCWU and FITUG believe that Guyana is strongest when we include everyone in our workforce, including our LGBT citizens. LGBT people are our neighbours, family, friends, and co-workers. They are an integral part of our communities and our workplaces"

Speaking out against the same laws which Miss Broad Street and the other man were breaking in the Ruimveldt police station on Sunday afternoon in  1959 Guyana.

In the Dominican Republic, the Supreme Court's ruling that same sex relationships are allowed in the military could come under attack by the Government.

WRITE IT IN FIRE: TRIBUTES TO MICHELLE CLIFF :Call for Submissions

Michelle Cliff (1946-2016) was a remarkable writer who claimed many identities she was taught to despise: Lesbian, Black, Woman, Jamaican. She wrote powerful novels, essays, stories, and poems that make us rethink what it means to love, to hope, and to have community. She also carved space for same-sex loving and diverse sexualities in the Caribbean by representing our desires fiercely and by being deeply rooted in place. She continues to inspire us to write our stories, our sense of self, in fire. “ A theory in the flesh means one where the physical realities of our lives – our skin color, the land or concrete we grew up on, our sexual longings ― all fuse to create a politic born out of necessity. ― Michelle Cliff, “Claiming An Identity They Taught Me To Despise” “ Who can say how many lives have been saved by books?” ― Michelle Cliff, Everything Is Now: New and Collected Stories “ It was Zoe, and Zoe alone, I thought of. She snapped into my mind, and I remem...
